HOLISTIC MASSAGE THERAPY
MASSAGE: More and more people are accepting responsibility for their own health care. As well as seeking conventional medical attention many people are turning to what is commonly termed complementary therapy.
Massage is one such therapy and treatment is styled to meet the specific needs of the individual client. In physical terms it means manipulating soft tissue for therapeutic purposes. The various massage movements, either individually or in combination, affect the skin, muscle, blood vessels, lymphatics, nerves and some internal organs, depending on the massage movement and technique used.
Holistic Massage takes into account the Mind, the Body and the Spirit. The holistic philosophy views health as a balance of these three aspects of life with the individual having responsibility for her/his own health.
Studies have shown that the greatest determinants of good health are personal health habits governing eating, smoking, drinking, environmental factors, and most important thoughts and attitudes (note the connection here with counselling). The holistic health philosophy considers the body as a dynamic energy system in a constant state of change affected directly by environmental and social factors.
Holistic massage involves two people working together on physical and non-physical levels to effect positive changes. It has both a physiological and psychological effect. High blood pressure, asthma, constipation, arthritic conditions, muscular strain and sciatica have benefitted from massage.
On a psychological level massage is an excellent therapeutic technique. It induces relaxation and is suited in the treatment of stress related problems such as insomnia, headaches and anxiety. It can also be helpful in some cases of depression.
A caring massage creates feelings of well-being, and elation and can therefore can be used quite simply to feel pampered and relaxed.
