CBT encourages and assists people to recognize dysfunctional thought patterns and counteract them with more logical and realistic thoughts. It helps you change the way you think, feel and behave.

CBT has been shown to help people with anxiety disorders, depression, eating disorders, OCD, sexual and relationship problems, anger and many other conditions. Your therapist will help you understand your current thought patterns, helping you to identify unhelpful or false ideas which can trigger off your difficulties or make them worse. CBT tends to be more structured and focussed than general counselling.

EMDR is a specialist therapy and has been found to be effective in treating:

  • anxiety and panic attacks
  • trauma following sexual abuse
  • phobias
  • complicated grief
  • self-esteem and performance anxiety
  • general trauma

Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) mimics the natural healing process of the mind which occurs during rapid eye movement (REM) sleep.

You will remain in control, fully alert, and wide awake during treatment, and REM will be recreated simply by asking you to watch the therapist's finger moving backwards and forwards across your visual field, following the movement with your eyes. This action helps disturbing unprocessed memories to lose intensity by moving them to another part of the brain that is able to process the memory in a very natural way, reducing the trauma, emotions and physical sensations previously attached to that memory. Reprocessing is usually experienced as something that happens spontaneously and new insights are felt to arise quite naturally from within.

EMDR has helped over a million individuals. Its reliability and effectiveness has been established by rigorous research.
